the story behind solo;sun
the story behind solo;sun
our story starts with three things: shea butter, mental health and giving back.
solo;sun collective was founded with a purpose: to help people connect their body and mind through everyday body care, and to use that ongoing practice to support medical access through amor initiatives.
the mind-body connection
people already interact with their bodies every day. most body care is designed to be fast and aesthetic. it’s something to get through.
moisturizing. bathing. exfoliating.
that contact already has meaning, whether it’s acknowledged or not.
body care is one of the most accessible ways people can support both their skin and their nervous systems, but we often miss it.
solo;sun was built on the understanding that these moments are not empty or neutral, and becoming aware of them consistently can change how people relate to their themselves.
HOW SOLO;SUN BEGAN
solo;sun began with its founder, ngodoo golden, a licensed esthetician with a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling. through years of working in both mental health and skincare spaces, she noticed the same patterns showing up in different forms and built solo;sun around addressing those overlaps. in skincare spaces, people were navigating dry, irritated skin, breakouts, and hyperpigmentation. in mental health spaces, that same strain appeared as sadness, anxiety, disrupted sleep, and disconnection. in both places, people wanted to feel safe in their bodies again, but did not know they were connected.
solo;sun is here to show that connection.
HOW IT WORKS
with each product, the formulas are intentionally simple and functional. they are made to support dry, reactive, and easily irritated skin, focusing on what works and what feels good.
the product names are also instructions. they tell you what to do, and what the product is designed to do at the same time. each product name points to both the action you’re taking and the change the product is meant to support.
over time, the instruction becomes familiar, and the meaning changes how you see your mind and body through continued use.
THE SEMICOLON
the semicolon in the name (and the product names) are intentional. in writing, it connects two related thoughts and says, "this isn’t over yet". it signals continuation. in mental health spaces, Project Semicolon gave us the idea that the semicolon symbolizes suicide awareness and prevention. it marks the decision to continue, as a way to say: i’m still here and i’m still fighting. solo;sun uses the semicolon as an ode to this meaning and to say, "we recognize what it takes to keep going.”
GIVING BACK
that sense of continuation extends beyond individual use. solo;sun was built, in part, to make supporting amor initiatives a reality. amor initiatives is a nonprofit founded by ngodoo's parents that provides medical aid to remote villages in benue state, nigeria. these communities are overlooked, and they matter. access to proper medical care is not a given, and solo;sun believes in amor initiatives' mission.
OUR ROOTS
solo;sun is also inspired by family and lineage. solo;sun gets its shea butter directly from Nigeria. Ngodoo's aunt travels to the local market in Nigeria, buys from the women who harvest and sell the shea nut, and ships it to the U.S. She's done it Ngodoo's whole life.
solo;sun also carries the legacy of ngodoo’s grandparents, baba + aya nyamor and baba + aya itiavkase, whose strength, joy, and fire continue to shape how responsibility and community are understood within the brand. their legacy is a reminder that:
caring for yourself is never just about you.
